A LOUIS XV GOLD-MOUNTED LACQUER SNUFF-BOX SET WITH A MINIATURE
by Jean-Guillaume Véalle (fl. 1754-1776), marked, Paris, 1764/1765, with the charge and discharge marks of Jean-Jacques Prevost 1762-1768, later struck with the Dutch post-1955 tax mark for 18-carat gold
Oval box, the cover, sides and base of Indian red-lacquer, the cover centred with a glazed oval portrait miniature on vellum of a lady in lace-bordered white dress, blue cloak draped over her shoulders, pearl necklace and blue ribbon and feather in her upswept powdered hair, within a bright-cut gold mount, the gold mounts pierced and engraved with sunbursts between festoons, the interior lined with tortoiseshell
