A LOUIS XV VARI-COLOUR GOLD SNUFF-BOX
by Barnabé Sageret (fl. 1731-1758), indistinctly marked, Paris, 1752/1753, with the discharge mark of Julien Berthe 1750-1756, later struck with two post-1893 French import marks
Rectangular box, the cover, four sides and base chased with rectangular panels of polished gold centred by oval reserves chased in four-colour gold with bucolic and harvesting scenes on a frosted ground, within fluted borders, the reserves on the hinged lid and on the base hung from bows and surrounded by fluted palmette spandrels in the corners, the reeded borders chased in four-colour gold with trailing foliage entwined with fluted ribbons
