An Unusual, Anhua, Iron-Red and Enamel-Decorated Blue and White Bowl

The deep sides decorated on the exterior with six blue and white medallions of figures in landscapes bordered in green and reserved on an iron-red diaper and chrysanthemum ground, between decorative borders enhanced by green and yellow enamel, the interior painted in blue and white in the center with two phoenixes in flight amidst peony stems within a band of iron-red diaper, with an anhua frieze of babao positioned above ruyi heads in the well and another band of iron-red diaper at the rim, possibly later enameled

Lot Essay

No other bowl decorated with the same unusual combination of techniques and designs appears to be published. In the note for the Marchant exhibition, op. cit., it is suggested that the design may have been inspired by 16th century kinrande bowls.
