Lot Essay

The print source for this plaquette is an engraving by Gerard de Lairesse (Le Blanc II, 41). The same print source was used for a fine engraved table top in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London (illustrated by J.W. Frederiks, Dutch Silver, The Hague, 1960, vol. III, no. 439). Frederiks considered the table top to be Dutch but it may well be French.
