An ivory netsuke
Unsigned (Kyoto or Osaka), Edo Period (Late 18th Century)
Katabori, stained ivory; a figure of a Westerner standing upright and facing to the front, with a long curly wig under his wide-brimmed, tasselled hat, dressed in a long coat with stylised floral and wave designs, and knee-breeches, the six buttons on the reverse of his stockings of dark horn (one missing), a further dark horn button in the back of his coat and another in the top of his hat, holding a long-tailed cockerel with both hands, its tail-feathers curling round his left side, the himotoshi formed by two holes in the back of his skirt, the larger hole below the smaller
