A special portrait commissioned for Richmond Cricket Club celebrating Smith's selection for the 1912 tour of England.

Born in Richmond, Melbourne, Smith was a rugged strokemaker with a liking for the offside. He debuted for Victoria in 1908-09, in 1911-12 he scored two attacking centuries against the touring MCC side. During the controversy surrounding the preparations for the 1912 tour, when the 'Big Six' (Trumper, Hill and others) withdrew from the team, Smith was selected. At the Oval he scored 100 against Surrey in a stand of 176 in 118 minutes for the sixth wicket. He was otherwise ineffective and the tour was generally a disaster. Smith was one of 3 players cited to answer questions about behaviour. He declined to appear claiming ill health. Smith was also a champion footballer. The son of George Smith, a Carlton star of the 80s, Smith was a brilliant centre-forward. He led Essendon to the 1911 flag playing at full forward. His selection on the 1912 cricket tour prevented him playing in back-to-back flags. His kicking style was photographed for use in schools and universities in Australia and overseas. He played 142 games for Essendon 1903-11 and 1913 (111 goals). In his sole game for Richmond 1914 he kicked 3 goals.
