The rectangular top set with a central ivory panel based on Guido Reni's fresco in the Palazzo Rospigliosi-Pallavicini, within concentric bands of geometric and foliate inlay, each side with a portrait medallion, the corners with square reserves of putti riding beasts, within an egg-and-dart moulded border, the similarly-decorated frieze set to the front with a long drawer, on cabriole sphinx monopodiae joined by a shaped undertier

Lot Essay

The present table is set with an exceptional inlaid panel depicting the renowned 17th century painting, the Aurora fresco, at the Palazzo Rospigliosi-Pallavicini in Rome. Painted in 1614 by Guido Reni (d.1642), Aurora, the dawn, is shown flying before the horse-drawn chariot of the sun-god Apollo. She scatters flowers while parting the clouds of night as Cupid follows bearing the flaming torch of daylight. Dancing Horae, the goddesses of the Seasons, accompany the group in their flight across the heavens.

An ebony centre table with identical ivory panel sold Christie's London, 1 November 2001, lot 26 (£19,975).
