Lot Essay

Thomas Johnson illustrated a related a naturalistic vine-entwined tree candlestand (pl. 47) and a pier table with 'slab' top and tree base (pl. 60) in his Collection of Designs, 1758. It also relates to an engraving of a pier table in M. Lock and H. Copland's A New Book of Ornaments, 1752, pl. 2.
A pair of related 'tree' pier tables, with marble tops, was supplied to Marcus Beresford, 1st Earl of Tyrone (b. 1694) for Curraghmore, Co. Waterford. They were sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 3 July 1997, lot 90 and are illustrated in H. Hayward, World Furniture, London, 1965, p. 136, pl. 501. The use of twisting vines in furniture is also seen on Irish mirrors, such as the three oval pier glasses at Castletown, co. Kildare, attributed to the Dublin carver Richard Cranfield (1713-1809) and the pair of oval mirrors attributed to John Booker and sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 29 November 2001, lot 31.
Similar 'tree' tables were made in Italy, and a twisting-vine centre table with a specimen marble top was sold by Madame Maria Cristina Piaggio Croce, in these Rooms, 11 December 2001, lot 115.
