Specialist note

Dunleary, later called Kingstown, was one of the main ports for shipping crossing the Irish channel. For a very similar view by the artist, in daylight rather than at night, and dated 1820, see John Hutchinson, James Arthur O'Connor, catalogue to the exhibition at the National Gallery, Ireland, and Ulster Museum, Belfast, 1985-6, no. 44.
