Circa 1765-70, stamped 'R.V.L.C.'
The circular top with pierced gallery enclosing a floral-trellis inlaid panel with central spiralling spray, the shaped frieze similarily inlaid and enclosing one drawer, on cabriole legs headed by channelled, scrolled acanthus volutes and joined by a circular undertier with corresponding marquetry centered by a spiralling spray, on splayed legs with inlaid panels terminating in foliate C-scroll sabots, with inscribed paper label 'J6904', the undertier with typed collection label Collection André Meyer New York 1970 and B 26, with depository label LE GARDE MEUBLE PUBLIC/18 Rue St. Augustin/42671/Bedel...cie

Lot Essay

Along with the other related table à chiffoniere by RVLC in this sale (lot 40), the present table is part of a related group by Roger van der Cruse, dit Lacroix, with trellis-patterned cornflower marquetry-inlaid oval or circular tops and undertiers centered by a swirling-acanthus reserve, double-scrolled cabriole legs and similar ormolu mounts. In addition to the group listed in the catalogue note for lot 40 (see above), a nearly identical unstamped circular table that was on the London market in 1957 is illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIe Siècle, Paris, 1989, p. 752, fig. B.
