Unsigned, Edo Period (Late 17th Century)
Of typical Rinpa lacquer form, with curved sides and corners, a slightly domed kabusebuta [overhanging lid] and no chirii [bevelled edges], the black lacquered ground decorated on the lid in gold and silver hiramaki-e and shell with stylised ajisai [hydrangea], the design continued on part of the sides of both lid and box, the other surfaces black lacquer, fittings associated, some old damage
