A Suzuribako [Writing-Box]
Unsigned, Edo Period (Late 17th Century)
Rectangular, with kabusebuta [overhanging lid] and chirii [bevelled edges], the exterior black lacquer sprinkled with medium-density gold hirame, decorated in gold nashiji, gold and red hiramaki- e, gold foil and shell with a mixed Chinese and Japanese landscape including rustic huts, a water-buffalo and boy, two Chinese scholars greeting one another outside a residence, pine trees, a jakago [basket of stones reinforcing the riverbank], the design continuing over the sides of both box and lid, the underside with very sparse gold hirame, the interior of the lid with gold hirame on black lacquer, decorated in coloured hiramaki-e and shell with grasses, fireflies and the crescent moon, the box with brush-tray, inkstone-tray, inkstone, and bronze suiteki [water-dropper], the brush-tray with pine-trees and fireflies in the same technique as the interior of the lid, the other surfaces all with sparse gold hirame on black lacquer, the rims gold lacquer, some old damage
