Signed Ittei (Nagoya or Gifu), Edo Period (Mid-19th Century)
Katabori, stained boxwood; a compact model of a horse with a large head in proportion to its body, in the characteristic Nagoya pose with its head turned sharply to the left, its muzzle reaching to its left haunch, the ribs slightly expressed under the very naturalistically incised hairwork, the himotoshi formed by the junction of the left legs, signed with incised and stained characters on a polished rounded rectangular reserve underneath the right haunch Ittei
