Engine: Vee Eight cylinder, pushrod overhead valves, 6,230cc; Gearbox, four-speed automatic; Suspension: front independent by unequal length wishbones and coil springs and hydraulic shock-absorbers, rear, semi-elliptic springs with radius rods and electrically controlled piston-type shock-absorbers; Brakes, four-wheel servo-assisted hydraulic and mechanical drums. In an Autocar Road Test, December 1960 they noted.
Without doubt the Continental Bentley lives up to the traditional associations of its name: few cars would provide as rapid, restful and satisfying transport from, say, Paris to Nice. On arrival at its destination this potent vehicle at once reverts to the exceptionally docile and distinguished town carriage.
BC 110 AR was ordered though Jack Barclay Ltd. for Melvyn Rollason, Ludstone Hall, Nr Wolverhampton, Staffs, taking delivery in February 1961. It is interesting to note that Mr Rollason must have intended to have James Young to build him a four door car, changing his mind at the last minute, as build sheets note the car being a four door car, on a recent inspection by Christie's it was evident that the car has always been in its current configuration. Mr Rollason had the car for some five years, the car passing to Jas Stewart in Cheshire in April 1967.
Little of the car's later history is known until Dr M Nowka owned the car in Germany. In Dr Nowka's ownership the car is prominently featured in Martin Bennett's standard reference work on these cars The Bentley Continental. The car went to Japan in the 1990s. In recent years the car has been restored although the black paintwork is finished to a good standard, unfortunately some small-localised areas have started to lift to the roof and top of the driver's side front wing. The interior is in excellent condition, also having been restored and having little to no use since.
Due to the length of time the car has been in its present ownership, Christie's would recommend a full mechanical inspection before the car is used. With only a handful of two door James Young cars built on the S2 Continental Chassis, this is a rare opportunity. It is supplied with copies of the build sheets.
