Lot Essay

This Irish centre table has a serpentined frieze echoing the scallop shell in its centre, and celebrating the triumph of Venus. Its bacchic lion-paw feet are squared in the Irish manner, while its 'Roman' acanthus carving extends down the leg and decorates the 'hock', a typical Irish characteristic.
A similar Irish centre table was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 14 June 2001, lot 151 (£28,200), while another was sold in the Michael Lipitch II sale, in these Rooms, 4 October 2001, lot 100 (£30,550).
