ZATTA, Antonio (fl. 1757-97). Atlante Novissimo. Venice: Antonio Zatta, 1779 [maps dated 1774-1785].
4 volumes, 2° (390 x 260mm). Each volume with hand-coloured and illuminated double-page engraved allegorical title, volume I with engraved armorial headpiece, initial and tailpiece vignette, all hand-coloured and illuminated in gold, the preface with hand-coloured engraved head- and tail-piece and initial and tailpiece vignette on final leaf, 218 hand-coloured double-page engraved maps and views, mounted on guards. (Occasional light browning.) Contemporary Italian marbled calf gilt, the covers with tooled border of trailing flowers and foliate cornerpieces, the spine gilt in 7 compartments, red morocco lettering pieces (some restoration to spines, some scuffing or rubbing to extremities). Provenance: Erik Nielsen (bookplate pasted inside upper cover of each volume).

The maps include Mitchell's important map of America on 12 sheets, a suite of Europe maps, county maps of Kent, Middlesex, Essex and Surrey, and various maps of Africa, Asia, Australasia, and of the Ancient world. Those of Australasia follow Cook's contemporary reports on the latest discoveries. Cf. Phillips, Atlases, 650-1. The maps in the present copy accord with the list of maps in each volume. (4)
