Details
APRES DE MANNEVILLETTE, Jean-Baptiste Nicolas Denis d' (1707-1780). Le Neptune Oriental. Paris: Demonville, and Brest: Malassis, 1775.

Large 2° (550 x 415mm). Text printed on blue paper. Engraved frontispiece of Neptune by J.B. Tilliard after F. Boucher, title with woodcut device, engraved dedication with headpiece by J. Mathieu, 63 engraved coastal charts and profiles, 30 double-page. (Lacking charts 10 and 46, chart 30 slightly soiled.) Contemporary calf gilt, the covers stamped with the French Royal arms, upper cover with gilt title 'Marine Service des Vaisseaux du Roy No. XL' (spine restored, new endpapers). Provenance: 'The gift of Captain Saml. Graves of H.M. Ship Sceptre to his brother Rear Admiral Sir Thos. Graves; Taken in the Naiad French Frigate in the East Indies 1782 commanded by M Villard de Joyeuse who afterwards commanded the French fleet against Lord Howe the 1st June 1794' (ownership inscription on title).

AN INTERESTING COPY CAPTURED IN A NAVAL ENGAGEMENT WITH THE FRENCH FRIGATE NAIDE (the "Niad" of the ownership inscription), identified on the binding as 'No. XL' in the French marine service. Second and enlarged edition, which added 41 new charts to the 22 of the original work. The H.M. Sceptre referred to in the inscription captured the French corvette Naide in the East Indies on 14th April, 1783. However, in this operation the Sceptre lost 24 men, whilst the crew of the Naide all survived. Villaret-Joyeuse, commander of the Naide, was again engaged by Admiral Howe in the battle of the 1st June, 1794 (better known as the 'Glorious First of June') to the west of Ushant. Intercepting a convoy of grain from America, Howe captured six ships and sank one, although the rest of the convoy escaped to France. NMM 3, 204.
