Lot Essay

Born in 1834, Benoît Rougelet (d.1894) studied under Duret and exhibited at the Salon from 1876, getting honourable mentions in 1887 and at the Paris 1889 Exposition Universelle, and a third class medal in 1892. He produced numerous busts and medallions portraying historical and contemporary French celebrities. He also sculpted classical figures and groups, such as the present lot.
