STANLEY'S R.G.S. DIPLOMA

Details
STANLEY'S R.G.S. DIPLOMA

Stanley's framed diploma from the Royal Geographical Society, awarding him the status of 'Honorary Corresponding Member', dated 'April 8th 1878' and signed by its President, Sir Rutherford Alcock, and by its Secretaries, Sir Clements R Markham and R.H. Major, old exhibition label, Isteddfod Genedlaethol Dinbych, 1939, no. 19, 'loaned by Capt. D.M. Stanley'; together with 2 framed groups of photographic representations of Stanley's many honorary addresses and geographical diplomas, one with 13 photographs surrounding a central photograph of Stanley, the other with 10 photographs surrounding and image of A.J. Wauter's map of L'Afrique Centrale published in 1886, both 27 x 34in. (690 x 870mm.).

The award of honorary member by the Royal Geographical Society put to rest the public controversy between Stanley and the R.G.S. that followed the Livingstone Search Expedition. Stanley's return to England in April 1878 attracted enormous attention, and the R.G.S. rushed to lay on a banquet in Stanley's honour and organized a lecture at Burlington House. This award would have probably been presented at the dinner. (3)
