A scrap album and two Newspaper cuttings Albums: the scrap Album including six photographs of Stanley, 1872-1879, a photograph of Kalulu, early printed and lithographic images of Stanley (and Livingstone) published in the Tailor and Cutter, The Hatter, The Graphic, Illustrated London News (all 1872) and others, engravings from English and French magazines and periodicals illustrating the expeditions, a cartoon from Le Triboulet ('Au Congo') [1880s] and cuttings relating to Livingstone's funeral; the first Newspaper Cuttings album with cuttings from the Livingstone Search Expedition (cuttings for 1872) from the Daily Telegraph, The New York Herald, The Times, and others, the inside cover inscribed 'H.M. Stanley /37 & 38 Langham Hotel, Portland Place'; the second Newspaper Cuttings album with cuttings from the Trans-African expedition, 4° and 2°.
A fascinating group of scrap albums documenting the world's reaction to Stanley's discovery of Livingstone and reporting his explorations on the Trans-Africa Expedition. The albums include a few early images of Stanley and Livingstone. Stanley stayed at the Langham during his visits to London in this period. He later took a small flat in Sackville Street, Piccadilly.
