FREEDOM OF THE CITY OF GLASGOW, JUNE 1890
A Victorian Scottish Silver-gilt rectangular Freedom Casket, the sides repoussé, chased and engraved with four views of City buildings and two of ships and a steam-train in oval cartouches with the Scottish thistle at intervals, the shaped angles with stiff-leaf and garland-draped supports with four globe finials (two detached), above a shaped foliate apron on four scoll feet, the slightly domed hinged cover centred with an oval cartouche enclosing the arms of the city within a leaf and berry wreath, with two views of Stanley meeting Dr. Livingstone and Emin Pasha, and two reserves, one with Stanley's entwined initials, the other with explorer's paraphenalia, both with stiff-leaf and berry scrolls and ribbon engraved with the inscription 'Unhesitating self-sacrifice, unwavering devotion to duty, dangers manfully met and resolutely overcome', boxed with olive silk lining, maker's mark of J. Muirhead & Sons, Glasgow, 1889. 9¾in. (25cm.) long, 50oz. (1,557gm.) gross.
Enclosed in the casket is the manuscript document admitting H.M. Stanley a Burgess and Guild Brother of the City and Royal Burgh of Glasgow 'in recognition of the heroic spirit and indomitable energy with which he has devoted his life to the exploration of Central Africa and the bringing to that Country within the range and influence of civilization', dated 12th June 1890.
