FREEDOM OF THE CITY OF MANCHESTER, JUNE 1890
A Victorian parcel gilt and enamel shaped rectangular Freedom Casket, the sides applied with a shield flanked by angels above foliate garlands and scrolls, the front shield with a portrait of H.M. Stanley, between two shaped rectangular plates with scenes of his life in Africa, the reverse with his initials, between plaques with fan, mirrors and other motifs, the sides with masks and foliate scrolls, the corners with young recumbent angels, on four ribbed ball feet, the slightly domed hinged cover with an oval with the arms of the city of Manchester in guilloché and en-plein enamel between engraved supporters, the border engraved 'The Freedom of the City of Manchester enclosed herein was presented to Mr. H.M. Stanley June 1890', between two shaped scroll plaques, all within gilt borders, boxed with red velvet interior, maker's mark of Elkington & Co., Birmingham, 1890 12½in. (31.8cm.) long, 67oz. (2,086gr.) gross
Enclosed in the casket is the vellum manuscript and watercolour scroll awarding Henry Morton Stanley the Honorary Freedom of the City of Manchester for 'the distinguished services rendered ... to the interests of civilisation and commerce by the explorations in Africa', dated 18th June 1890, oyster watered silk backing, on ivory rollers.
Together with the illuminated manuscript address from the Manchester Chamber of Commerce, dated 21st June 1890, to H.M. Stanley, thanking him for 'the valuable service you have rendered to commerce by the information you have made public concerning the interior of Africa, and your declaration of its suitableness as a sphere for commercial enterprise', praising him for his courage and resolution, for 'Your outspoken remarks on the subject of slavery and the atrocities connected therewith, your strong condemnation of the traffic in firearms', and hoping 'that your arduous labours may result in the opening up of the "Dark Continent" to the ameliorating influence of civilization, and the development, in the best sense, of its future welfare', 4 leaves including decorative title, 4to, original brown morocco by Palmer & Howe, Princess Street, Manchester, with blue and yellow onlayed border and initials, pale blue watered silk liners and doublures, in original leather box (cover detached); and a similar vellum address from the Manchester Geographical Society dated June 20th 1890, 6pp, similarly bound and boxed; with a photograph of Stanley on the Town Hall steps.
