Photogravure frontispiece portraits, 36 plates, 7 maps, including large folding map at end of each volume, other maps and numerous illustrations in text, many full page. Original brown cloth, spines titled in gilt, top edges gilt (a little rubbed, front inner hinges of vol. I split, fore-edges spotted). FIRST EDITION. Contains many references to Stanley. Hosken p. 110; together with the same author's The Uganda Protectorate (London, 1902, 2 vols.) and Liberia (London, 1906, 2 vols.), both first editions in original cloth.
Harry Johnston was a strong supporter of Stanley in the 1890s and spoke up for him on several occasions. Johnston himself was very effective in helping to set up the British territory of Uganda. (7)
