LUDWIG VON HÖHNEL
Discovery of Lakes Rudolf and Stefanie: A Narrative of Count Samuel Teleki's Exploring and Hunting Expedition in Eastern Equatorial Africa in 1887 and 1888 ... translated by Nancy Bell. London: Longmans, Green, 1894. 2 volumes, 8° (235 x 157mm). Plates and illustrations. Large folding coloured map at the end of each volume, both partially backed on linen. (Occasional spotting.) Original brown cloth gilt, unopened. Provenance: C. King, Torquay (bookseller's label).
FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, A FINE UNOPENED COPY WITH STANLEY'S BOOKPLATE. While Count Samuel Teleki von Szek's expedition in Eastern Equatorial Africa during 1887 and 1888 had a scientific element, Höhnel's account was a dramatic story of the sort Stanley enjoyed. It was intentionally "written for the general reading public, and deals rather with the adventures and experiences met with, than with the scientific observations taken" (Preface, p. xi). (2)
