Half-title. 29 black and white plates, illustrations (some full-page), after Marston, Murray, Sir Philip Brocklehurst and others. Original blue cloth, upper cover blocked in blue, spine lettered in gilt.

FIRST EDITION, a very fine copy and 'very scarce' (Rosove). 'I would advise anyone who wants to get to the kernel of the life of the Polar explorer to read the book' (Shackleton). Conrad p.145; Rosove 236.A2; Spence 831.
