SIR ERNEST HENRY SHACKLETON (1874-1922)

Colour frontispiece, 1 folding map, 87 plates, illustrations. (Some browning to text as usual.) Original cloth, blocked in silver on upper cover and spine, lower cover blocked in blind with Heinemann device, dust-jacket (the dust-jacket with small tears and some discoloration to backstrip).
FIRST EDITION, FIRST IMPRESSION of 'a classic and one of the finest [works] in ... Antarctic literature' (Rosove). A very good copy with the rare dust-jacket and the silver blocking on the cover un-oxidised. For this work, 'Shackleton once again had the writing assistance of Edward Saunders [as with The Heart of the Antarctic]. Shackleton dictated the text to him early in 1917; the final editing was done by Leonard Hussey of the marooned Elephant Island party ... Shackleton derived most of the account from his recollections; he had kept only a rudimentary diary. He based the stories of the marooned Elephant Island party ... and the Ross Sea party ... on diaries and conversations' (Rosove). Conrad p.224; Rosove 308.A1 ('Uncommon.
