FRANK ARTHUR WORSLEY (1872-1943)
Autograph manuscript notes, n.p., n.d. [c.1932], on the achievement of the Ross Sea Party of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, 1¼ pages, 8vo, on verso and upper margin of a typed letter signed by J. Gordon Hayes, 17 November 1932, referring to his book The Conquest of the South Pole (1932); with an autograph list of his Polar service signed by Worsley, one page, 4to; and a photograph of Shackleton and Worsley in San Francisco in November 1916, by Underwood & Underwood, New York, 180 x 230mm.
Worsley's compressed notes amount to a defence of the conduct of the Ross Sea Party under Aeneas Mackintosh in the face of inadequate funding and equipment. He begins with the instructions for the wintering of the ship, and notes that 'Mac [Mackintosh] took rem[ain]dr of Mawson's stores [from 1911 Australasian Antarctic Expedition] that wd pass survey & that was Ross Sea Party's main food supply ... They were v. hard up'. There were problems with the crew (the alcoholic Joyce), and 'No Exp. ship ev. saild so parish riggd'. Worsley then describes the circumstances of Aurora breaking away from Cape Evans, leaving the expedition in increased difficulties. 'Ship under mannd not seaworthy cond. the work accomp[lishe]d by her small crew splendid effort ... as far as Sh[ackleton] was concer[ne]d ther'd have been no Ross Sea Ex & no dep[o]ts but for M[ackintosh]'s supreme effts in Syd[ney] & on Barr[ier]: Hon[our] to whom Hon. is due'.
