Joyce, a veteran of the Discovery and Nimrod expeditions, was a dog driver in the Ross Sea Party on Shackleton's Endurance Expedition, and succeeded to leadership of the Party on the death of Mackintosh. The Aurora led Shackleton's relief expedition which received the survivors of the Ross Sea Party in 1917.
