CORRECTED PAGE PROOFS OF THE FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, INSCRIBED BY ELIOT on the front: "Corrected TSE 2.6.44." At head in another hand someone has written in pencil "Mr. Eliot." The stamp of the printer Robert MacLehose & Co. of Glasgow is beneath Eliot's inscription.
Eliot has made two minor changes--"Summer" to "summer" in "East Coker" and the removal of a comma in "The Dry Salvages," part II--and one more significant change in part II of "Burnt Norton," where he changes the line "And reconciles forgotten wars" to read "Appeasing long forgotten wars." The epigram beneath the title to "Burnt Norton" has been circled in blue crayon. Next to it is a note, possibly in Eliot's hand or a printer's: "and put in a smaller type, as in American edition." The first English edition was published on 31 October 1944. Gallup A43b.
