8o. Title-leaf printed on orange paper. Original grey cloth (some spotting, pale circular stain on front endpages). Provenance: E. McKnight Kauffer (1890-1954), book and poster designer (presentation inscription); Carter Burden.

FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY ELIOT TO THE ARTIST E. MCKNIGHT KAUFFER on the front free endpaper: "For Ted & Marion from T. Possum in memory The White House Dec. 15-18. 1939."

Kauffer was a member of Wyndam Lewis's circle in the teens and it was he who urged Lewis to organize the short-lived "X" group in 1919, reconstituting the pre-war Vorticist group. Kauffer made a strong mark as a book designer and illustrator, but is best known for the posters he designed for the London Underground. Lewis described the Tube tunnels as Kauffer's own "subterranean picture galleries." Though Eliot was in principle against illustrated editions of his poetry, he wrote to Kauffer saying that his "is the only kind of decoration I can endure."

The two were long-time admirers of each other's work, and Eliot was a frequent visitor to the Kauffer's "White House," as their home in England was known. When Eliot reprinted the patriotic poem "Defence of the Islands" in his Collected Poems 1909-1962, he dedicated it "To the memory of Edward McKnight Kauffer." Gallup A34b.
