A MINA'I POTTERY BOWL
Central Persia, circa 1200
Of rounded form on short spreading foot, the white interior painted in underglaze blue and manganese and enamelled in red, green and black with a central enthroned figure flanked by two attendants, two smaller figures above and two harpies below, in a broad border of knotted blue stylised kufic decorated with red and turquoise leafy and floral motifs, blue lobes around the rim, the exterior with a band of cursory black inscription between red lines, composite, the main figures included from another bowl, some restoration and damage to rim

Lot Essay

The notes on the export licence affixed to the exterior of this bowl are particularly interesting as regards the condition. It is an official export licence, receipt no.2048, dated 1328 (shamsi = 1949 AD). This bowl is no. 3 in the group and is described as "white bowl enamelled, added double shell, restored with colours and little new colour, weight 498g".
