The antique model for the present figure was excavated from Prince Borghese's property at Gabii, near Rome in 1792 and purchased by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1807. The statue was displayed at the Louvre in 1820, where it has remained since. Once described as "one of the pearls of the Museum...among the most admired masterpieces produced by Greek sculpture" (W. Fröhner, Notice de la sculpture antique du Musée National du Louvre), the marble is a copy of the image made by Praxiteles for the temple of Artemis Brauronia on the Acropolis of Athens.
