Dance was one of Canova's favourite themes, and often influenced his drawings, reliefs, paintings and sculptures. The original 'Dancer' was once at Malmaison and is now in the Hermitage. Possibly commissioned by Josephine de Beauharnais in 1802, the sculpture was transferred to Paris where it was enthusiastically acclaimed when exhibited at the Louvre. It has been suggested that Canova's dancers influenced the steps and gestures of dance in the 19th century. Copies of the sculpture are in the National Gallery of Canada, the Rothschild collection and at Apsley House in London.
