Lot Essay

One of the new ways in which original prints were offered to the public in the 1890s was in the form of albums. L'Estampe originale was published by Andre Marty and eventually ran to nine separate albums. Lautrec was responsible for the lithographic wrapper produced for the first album and for the color lithograph, Aux Ambassadeurs (see lot 16) which appeared in the sixth. In this lot, he depicts Jane Avril examining a proof which has just been pulled by Père Cotelle, the master printer at Edward Ancourt et Cie.
