A RARE IVORY 'DRAGON AND PHOENIX' DOUBLE VASE
Qing Dynasty, probably 18th Century
The double hexagonal tapering vases carved around the exterior with a high-relief phoenix and a chilong dragon emerging between the vases from one side to the other flanked by subordinate phoenixes, the vases carved in medium-relief with archaistic scrolling dragons and phoenixes below key-pattern around the rims, the latter connected by taotie masks
3¼ in. (8.5 cm.) high

Lot Essay

Compare the rhinoceros horn carving in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Zhongguo Meishu Quanji, vol.11, Beijing, 1987, no.130, which has very similar designs to the present lot, and is attributed to the Qianlong period by the authors
