Lot Essay

Among the many interesting features contained in this watch is the early form of split seconds chronograph work. Both hands are operated by one button.

The split second system is operated in the following manner:

1st push starts both hands
2nd push stops one hand
3rd push stops 2nd hand
4th push brings hands together and resets the chronograph.

This watch was sold on 15th December 1870 for 4000 Swiss Francs. There are two other known watches with similar features, the first No.5194 is owned by Audemars Piguet and was originally presented as a prize for the Epson Derby. The other No.10586 also dating from 1870 is in the museum at Le Santier.
