A MEXICAN THREE-COLOUR GOLD CHEEROT CASE
Mexico City, circa 1825, struck with the mark of the chief assayer Cayetano Buitrón 1823-1843 and with the Mexico City hallmark and the taxmark, maker's mark indistinct possibly including an O or Q
Rectangular upright box of oblong section, the domed cover centred by a basket of flowers chased in two-colour gold on a matted lozenge surrounded by four roses on a structured ground, the front and rear sides decorated with polished strapwork on a scalloped structured ground scattered with flower sprigs, centred by lobed matted gold reserves chased with a pair of doves with a wreath hovering over an altar of love with burning hearts next to a quiver and bow, and on the back a gentleman coming out of his hut and following two birds, two other birds following him, the sides with similar reserves chased with flowersprays, the upper and lower frosted gold borders chased with sprigs of flowers, the gadrooned gold rims flanked by dotted lines, burnished gold base, rose-cut diamond-set silver pushpiece
