An ornamental turning lathe by Holtzapffel & Co, No. 2456, with traversing mandrel headstock with six rows of holes in dividing plate, segment apparatus with tangent screw, star-wheel with six hobs (five in aluminium), rear-mounting spiral apparatus with thirty change-wheels, ornamental-turning slide-rest with cradle, curvilinear attachment and twelve steel templates, hand-rest with six tees, screw-barrel tailstock, eccentric, rectilinear and die-chucks numbered for the lathe, oval chuck (un-numbered) with ring, apparatus for equal division of the ellipse, rectangular two-jaw steel chuck by Holtzapffel, No. 1243, dome-chuck No. 2352, twenty-two brass chucks (including three spring chucks No. 1079), two boring collars and one base, slope-top cutter box containing 59 slide-rest and 133 ecf cutters, tool-pad and sundries, fitted case of six engineer-made drill-spindles, internal cutting frames and extension shanks, eccentric cutting frame, four turned boxwood containers of 29 ornamental and seven plain drills, mandrel tap, thirty large slide-rest tools, later Evans-pattern overhead with cast aluminium standards, treadle gear, electric motor, a quantity of hardwood samples and workpieces including bog oak, rosewood, ebony and cocobolo; and a small display board of ornamental turning samples

Lot Essay

Lathe No 2456 was supplied to R. Stanley Clarke Esq. on December 10 1900. It was acquired by the late T.D. Walshaw in 1974, and features prominently in his book Ornamental Turning, published in 1990. He was a prolific writer on model engineering topics, using the pseudonym Tubal Cain.
