CARY'S Pocket GLOBE agreeable to the latest DISCOVERIES Pubd by J. & W. Cary, Strand, Apr. 1. [?]1792
A 3-inch (7.6cm.) diameter terrestrial pocket globe made up of twelve hand-coloured engraved gores, the equatorial, Meridian of Greenwich and equinoctial colure all graduated in degrees, the ecliptic graduated in days of the house of the Zodiac with sigils, the oceans showing the antipodes of London and criss-crossed with the tracks of Cook, Severs, King, Furneaux, Clerke, Shortland, Marshall and the Scarborough, the Resolution, the Discovery, the Adventurer and the Lady Penrya (Penrhyn), with many dates and a note at the Sandwich Islands Owyhee where Cook was killed 1779, the Antarctic with no land shown, the continents variously outlined and shaded in green, yellow and orange and showing rivers, cities and some mountains in pictorial relief, Australia labelled NEW HOLLAND with projected southern coastline and Tasmania shown as an island labelled Diemens Land, China showing the Great Wall, Africa showing NEGROLAND, the Mountains of the Moon, CAFFRERIA and HOTTENTOTS, Canada with projected northern coastline (scratches, abrasions, discolouration and varnish loss throughout, a large area of plaster and paper lacking at the North Pole) with two iron axis pins, contained in the original fishskin-covered spherical wooden case, the interior laid with two sets of twleve hand-coloured engraved celestial gores laid to the ecliptic poles, NEW CELESTIAL GLOBE Pub.d by J. & W. Cary, Strand, the ecliptic graduated in days of the houses of the Zodiac with sigils, the equatorial graduated in degrees, the equinoctial colure labelled but ungraduated, the celestial polar and tropic circles marked, the stars to several orders of magnitude but with no table, some labelled with Greek characters, the constellations not drawn but the boundaries shown in dotted outline, the edge of the case edged with red paint and with two brass hooks and eyes (some discolouration to gores, wear to case edges, hinge broken)
