An early 18th-Century French silver inclining compass sundial,
signed on the underside CHAPOTOT A PARIS, the hour scale IIII-XII, XII-VIII with folding foliate-decorated gnomon, engraved on a shaped and hinged plate, the folding latitude arm graduated 0-60°, the octagonal horizontal plate engraved with the latitudes of twenty continental cities and towns and inset with a glazed compass, engraved with an eight pointed wind rose, the circumference graduated in degrees in four quadrants, the steel needle with brass cap, the underside of the horizontal plate engraved with the latitudes of twenty more continental cities and towns, supported on turned silver foot -- 2 7/8in. (7.3cm.) long
