A ROMAN BRONZE BALSAMARIUM
Circa 2nd Century A.D.
In the form of a bust of an African, with his head turned slightly to his left, a mantle draped across his left shoulder, the right side of his torso bare, his hair composed of thick layered curls, his wide eyes with the pupils inlaid in glass, with a broad nose and wide, fleshy lips, the top of the head open with a hinge at the back for the lid, which sits flush with the head and completes the hair, a ring surmounting either side of the head through which is looped the knobbed ends of the handle
