Lot Essay

The 'Great Lisbon Earthquake' took place on the 1st of November 1755. The devestating earthquake caused fires to break out and was followed by a tidal wave, leaving large parts of the city destroyed. This catastrophy had a large impact on the rest of Europe and has been depicted by many engravers since.
