An exceptional Edwardian mahogany, marquetry inlaid and brass-mounted longcase clock with choice of quarter chimes on tubular bells or gongs, circa 1905
The substantial case with brass finials to a hood with swan neck pediment, with two brass stop-fluted columns with Composite capitals to each side, lattice work sound frets to the sides, the trunk door elaborately inlaid with trailing foliage, flowering baskets and peacocks, flanked by inset brass stop-fluted columns with Composite capitals, the blocks above and below inlaid with Prince of Wales feathers and conch shells respectively, the sides of the case with fabric-backed sound frets conforming to the hood above, on inverted breakfront plinth with conforming marquetry and columns, the stepped and moulded base below on bracket feet, the 14in. wide brass dial with raised mask and foliate lower spandrels to a silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring signed W. Burden Salisbury, the silvered centre engraved with foliate scrolls and with a seconds ring, pierced and blued steel hands, the upper spandrels with subsidiary silvered seconds rings for chime/silent and chime selection (4 gongs/8 tubes/8 gongs/4 tubes), inscribed TEMPUS FUGIT below the arch and UTENDUM EST AETATE CITO PEDE PRAETERIT AETAS on a silvered plaque above a painted rolling moon, the substantial three train movement with five back-screwed and front-pinned pillars, anchor escapement, offering a choice of chimes on eight tubular bells suspended from the back board with hour strike on further tubular bell, or chimes on eight coiled gongs positioned on the backboard lower down the case, with hour strike on further gong to the upper backboard -- 107¾in. (274cm.) high
