A Victorian two-day marine chronometer, circa 1840
The silvered dial with Roman numerals signed James Mc.Cabe. Royal Exchange, London. No. 1856, gold spade hour and minute hands, blued steel seconds hand, movement with Earnshaw escapement having a cut bimetallic balance with segmental heat compensation weights, blued steel helical balance spring, similarly signed top-plate, brass gimbal and bowl numbered 185, brass-bound three-tier box with external brass drop handles, vacant signature plaque to the top lid and roundel plaque to the bottom section later engraved 1856 -- 83 mm. dial diam., 158 mm. sq. box
