[JAPANESE DRAWINGS]. 11 accordian form albums of Japanese botanical and ornithological watercolors. [Edo period, early 19th century].
11 volumes (including 8 oblong), 2o (290 x 414 mm overall). 301 ink and watercolor drawings on paper laid down (sizes 78 x 73 mm to 385 x 270 mm), comprising 292 botanical subjects and 9 ornithological [in vol. VIII], some with integral ink manuscript identification in Japanese characters, others with identification on small separate slip pasted beside image, a few with red inkstamped seal (some worming throughout, sometimes affecting images). Accordian form albums, covered in decorated paper (mostly floral) and bearing manuscript labels on covers (some wear, some paper peeled). Provenance: Robert H. Roland (pencilled note in vol. I "gift of Robert H. Roland Dec 1959"); Massachusetts Horticultural Society (shelf marks written in ink on covers).
A FINE AND EXTENSIVE COLLECTION OF EDO PERIOD DRAWINGS. Among the subjects are flowers, grasses, leaves, fruits (cherries, berries, oranges, lemons, apples, etc.), vegetables (carrots, gourds, root), mushrooms. The technique combines a light use of washes with heavier applications of body color for the petals. A very small brush is often used to enhance detail on petals and leaves, oftentimes with great delicacy. The looseness of some of the drawings suggests that these were not albums prepared for sale, but rather the private collection of an artist (or several artists) of great skill.
