2o (368 x 298 mm). 45 ink and watercolor drawings of lillies on paper, each within a pencil border and with integral ink manuscript identification in Japanese characters, mounted on guards. Nineteenth-century plum half morocco, marbled boards, gilt-stamped "M.H.S." at foot of spine (inner hinges reinforced, some light wear). Provenance: Prof. John Robinson (MHS presentation bookplate dated 1897); Massachusetts Horticultural Society (bookplates; stamps).

A VERY FINE SERIES OF FINISHED DRAWINGS OF LILLIES FROM THE MEIJI PERIOD. The technique used combines the use of light washes (generally for the petals) with the heavy application of body color (for the leaves). A thin brush was often employed to apply bodycolor in lines to suggest details (leaf veins or petals).
