Additional engraved allegorical title (defective), woodcut printer's device on title, 29 engraved double-page cosmological charts, 4 engraved and 2 woodcut illustrations in text, ruled throughout in red. (One chart torn along fold, a few with minor marginal tears.) 17th-century red morocco gilt, spine in 8 compartments, gilt lettered in one, others elaborately gilt, edges gilt (some wear to spine and corners, light staining to covers). Provenance: Algernon Capell, second Earl of Essex of the second creation (bookplate dated "1701" on verso of engraved title).

FIRST EDITION, second issue, the Earl of Essex's copy of the only celestial atlas published in the Netherlands during the golden age of Dutch cartography and one of the most spectacular atlases published in the second half of the seventeen century. Andreas Cellarius was born around 1596 in Neuhausen, Germany, moved to the Netherlands were he married in 1625 in Amsterdam. In 1630 he moved to The Hague and in 1637 he was appointed as rector of the Latin School in Hoorn, which is mentioned on the title-page. Koeman IV: Cel 2.
