A fine and rare English brass Holland Circle
Signed J. Search Crown Court Soho London. 18th Century
The central glazed floating card compass with a hand-coloured wind rose, thirty-two compass points and graduations in four quadrants, the brass cover applied on the inside with an indentical although uncoloured compass paper, the alidade with two sights and verniers graduated 60-0-60 to read of the circumference scale 0-180° (x2), with two fixed sights and a staff mounting with retaining screw, mounted via a modern brass compass joint to a baluster-turned mahogany column and circular plinth base, the column with a brass holder attached, presumably for the compass cover
