A Rectangular Export Lacquer Cabinet
Momoyama-Edo period (17th century)
With a drop front hinged at the bottom and designed on the outside with gold lacquer and inlaid shell on a black-lacquer ground, the front and top panels with three fans, the sides with two fans, each decorated with fruiting trees, chevrons, stylized chrysanthemums or roundels of florets, the area around the fans inlaid with shell, the top panel with three fans, each panel enclosed by inlaid shell chevrons and a diaper pattern of flower heads in gold lacquer, the sides each inlaid with two fans within a border of stylized leaves, the interior fitted with eleven drawers, the center drawer carved with an arched niche with a lockplate, the faces of the drawers in gold with scrolling foliage within wide borders of irregular pieces of inlaid mother-of-pearl, the interiors of the drawers black and red lacquer, the interior of the hinged door lacquered with gold vines and inlaid mother-of-pearl leaves within a border of mother-of-pearl cut in the shapes of stylized leaves,the back panel matching the interior of the door, the hardware, of a later period
