A Small Export Lacquer Coffer
Momoyama period (16th-17th century)
Rectangular, with a hinged and domed cover and decorated in gold hiramaki-e and inlaid shell on a black-lacquer ground with rectangular panels of mandarin orange trees, camellias and paulownia, each panel enclosed by borders of gold lacquer and mother-of-pearl chevrons, the interior lacquered black; fitted with gilt-copper hardware comprising hinges and lock plate engraved with floral scroll and the hasp with a cherry blossom, the handle with chrysanthemum-head bosses
